The Invisible Workload Nobody Really Talks About
Running a business often means wearing every hat. And for many women, running a household means wearing every hat there too. Very often, those hats come with an overwhelming ‘invisible workload’ that can quietly catch us out.
There are the obvious ‘visible’ tasks which include:
Replying to emails.
Managing clients, children, or both.
Keeping up with business admin and life admin.
Following up invoices and checking cash flow.
Making, remembering and attending appointments.
Answering messages, group chats or emails late at night.
However, for many women in business, that workload doesn’t stop there.
Because alongside the visible work sits the ‘invisible workload’ too. The mental list that never fully switches off.
The one constantly running in the background:
What needs doing.
Have you forgotten something.
Who and what needs chasing.
Tomorrow – what do I need to remember.
Even during the “quiet” moments, the mental tabs are still open.
When the Invisible Workload Overwhelm Becomes 'The Norm'
The difficult part about both the visible and invisible workload is that this way of working can slowly become ‘your normal’.
Many women get so used to juggling everything that they stop recognising just how much they’re carrying. Because when you’re capable, organised and used to figuring things out, it’s easy to convince yourself that you should be able to manage it all and that this is simply an ordinary part of life. Does this sound familiar?
So the late nights continue.
The mental checklists grow.
The admin gets pushed back.
And ‘I’ll sort that tomorrow’ becomes part of everyday life.
The truth is, the issue often isn’t time management or motivation.
It’s capacity.
There are simply too many tabs open at once, mentally, emotionally and physically.
Most of us have heard that phrase before ‘There are too many tabs open.’
Maybe you’ve heard friends or family say it.
Maybe you’ve said it yourself.
Because eventually, constantly carrying everything starts to impact more than just your workload.
It affects your focus.
Your energy.
Your ability to switch off.
And sometimes, even the enjoyment of the business you worked so hard to build is lost.
